Gordon’s Bay Celebrates World Red Cross Day Like Never Before
On the 8th of May, the tranquil seaside town of Gordon’s Bay was buzzing with excitement, emotion, and community spirit. Residents, businesses, and visitors gathered in a remarkable show of solidarity to celebrate World Red Cross Day—not just with words, but with a heartfelt action.
A soft toy drive, spearheaded by Gordon’s Bay Tourism and the Gordon’s Bay Business Association, became a town-wide campaign to bring comfort to children in hospitals and those receiving emergency medical care by air. The initiative quickly outgrew its humble beginnings. What started as a target of 1,000 soft toys turned into an astonishing final count of more than 2,000 plush companions—each one destined to bring warmth, hope, and reassurance to a child facing uncertainty.
To understand how this beautiful campaign unfolded, we must look at where it all began.
World Red Cross Day: Honouring a Global Mission
Every year on May 8th, World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated around the globe. The date commemorates the birth of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Dunant’s vision of impartial humanitarian aid has become the foundation of one of the world’s largest and most trusted humanitarian movements.
Across continents, Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies use this day to celebrate their core values—humanity, neutrality, voluntary service, unity, and universality—and to shine a light on ongoing efforts in emergency relief, healthcare, and education. This year, Gordon’s Bay chose to honour these values in a uniquely touching way: by bringing the community together to comfort children in crisis.
A Soft Toy Drive Takes Flight
With Red Cross Day as inspiration, Gordon’s Bay Tourism and the Gordon’s Bay Business Association issued a call to action: donate a soft toy to comfort a child in hospital or receiving air medical assistance. The message was simple, yet it struck a deep chord within the community.
Local businesses immediately responded, volunteering their premises as drop-off points and amplifying the message far and wide. These included:
-
Gordon’s Bay Tourism Office
-
SPAR Gordon’s Bay
-
Gordon’s Bay Security (GBSec)
-
Krystal Beach Hotel
-
Thirsty Oyster
-
Café Zest
-
Baykem Pharmacy
-
Sunset Bay Spur
-
PC Surgeon
-
Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club
-
Blue Crane Funerals
Each location became more than a collection point—it became a hub of kindness. Customers dropped off bags of toys, shared stories, and left with full hearts, knowing they were part of something greater.
To make the initiative as inclusive as possible, the Tourism Office offered a beautiful selection of new teddies for purchase. This allowed everyone, even those without a toy to spare, to contribute to the cause.
The Final Countdown: Building a Movement
As the big day drew closer, momentum surged. Social media lit up with cheerful countdowns, behind-the-scenes snapshots, and smiling volunteers. Every day brought in more toys and more excitement.
Photos showed piles of plush toys spilling over counters, volunteers cheerfully sorting teddies, and children proudly dropping off donations. The whole town was swept up in the magic.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, logistics were being carefully coordinated. Heyns de Waal from Gordon’s Bay Security worked closely with Air Mercy Services (AMS) and Netcare 911 to plan the uplifting send-off. Both helicopters and ground vehicles would be used to collect the toys—a symbolic flight of hope.
The Big Day: When Hearts Took Flight
May 8th began with a layer of mist blanketing the mountains. At first, the weather raised concerns—would the helicopters be able to land? But soon, the clouds lifted, and the sun broke through, bathing Gordon’s Bay in golden light. It was a sign: the day would be perfect.
The distant hum of rotors was the first clue that the moment had arrived. As the helicopters appeared on the horizon and descended into view, onlookers were filled with awe. The downdraft from the rotors kicked up dust and cheers—it was quite literally a breathtaking arrival.
After the thrilling landing, the gathered crowd turned their attention to the stage. Councillor Neil de Beer delivered a powerful address, speaking passionately about the warmth, unity, and compassion that define Gordon’s Bay. The CEO of AMS also addressed the audience, offering heartfelt thanks and reminding everyone of the profound impact these toys would have on young patients during some of the most frightening moments of their lives. Heyns de Waal added his voice, acknowledging the critical role of local businesses and emergency services, and expressing his deep gratitude to everyone involved.
With hearts full and a few tears shed, the community moved into a joyful photo session. Laughter filled the air as people of all ages played with the toys, posed with teddy bears, and captured memories. For a moment, it felt like being a child in a toy store—innocent, joyful, and entirely present.
Our goal had been 1,000 toys. But in the true spirit of Gordon’s Bay, we doubled that number. Over 2,000 cuddly companions were collected. There were so many, in fact, that they couldn’t all fit in the helicopters or emergency vehicles—but not to worry: every single toy reached its destination.
More Than Just a Toy
To an adult, a soft toy might seem like a simple thing. But to a child in hospital or being airlifted away from home and family, it becomes a friend. A source of comfort. A symbol that someone, somewhere, cares.
This drive wasn’t just about generosity—it was about connection. About letting children know that even in their darkest moments, they’re not alone. It was a powerful reminder of how much can be accomplished when a community chooses compassion over convenience.
And Gordon’s Bay? It showed up in full force.
Looking Ahead: The Start of a Tradition
What began as a one-time gesture is now poised to become an annual tradition. Gordon’s Bay Tourism and the Business. With so many people asking how they can help next year, the sky truly is the limit.
Beyond the primary mission of supporting children in medical distress, the initiative also brought broader benefits. It raised the profile of the town, boosted local morale, and strengthened business and community ties. It reminded everyone that when you lead with heart, good things follow.
A Community That Shines: Our Gratitude
This event would not have been possible without the extraordinary support of many. To the businesses that served as drop-off points, promoted the campaign, and encouraged others—thank you for your generosity and leadership.
To AMS, Netcare, GBSec, and all the paramedics and emergency workers—thank you for your service, your compassion, and your partnership in making this initiative soar.
To every person who donated a teddy, bought one from the Tourism Office, or simply helped spread the word—thank you for believing in the power of small acts of kindness.
And to the children receiving these soft toys—know that each one carries a message from Gordon’s Bay: you are not alone. We are thinking of you, rooting for you, and sending you love in every stitch.
In Closing: A Message of Hope
The 2025 Red Cross Day soft toy drive in Gordon’s Bay wasn’t just a campaign—it was a celebration of empathy. It was a reminder that even in uncertain times, there are people who care. It showed the world that Gordon’s Bay isn’t just a beautiful town—it’s a town with a big, beautiful heart.
Next year, we’ll be back. Teddies in hand, spirits high, and hope soaring overhead. Because here in Gordon’s Bay, we believe in the power of community.
